Ancillary bits and inspection continued

Had part of the day to get on the 41 engine today. Although the audio is not bueno ( I forgot to Lav mic ' 'cause duh. )  The long version is : You Tube Link .  The short version is that the head cover is clean compared to may hoopty rides I have had, as are the valves and rockers and springs and pushrods.  I mean nothing bent broken nor are any showing signs of excessive wear.  Fuel pump and distributor came off clean as well as the oil filler - breather tube, side cover and head cover were cake.

Not a fan of the Gribbleys

I had some time to see if the motor had loosened and it had not.  My brother Jim has a spare 235 fan but the 216 used a 1" hub center and the 235 is 5/8" so not gonna fly  Was looking at the situation more and saw that there are some Gribbley's in the engine compartment - battery tray I believe  - that I should probably address with the Shop Vac

Plugs out and ...

Image
Welp its about 100F out side and my Covid is gone so it's time to get to the truck. The Engine code is a 216 Chevrolet from 1941 and I really want to see if I can free it up.  I was able to pull each plug - goodness knows I was sure they would be frozen and yank the threads from the head.... but the Mojo was good today and they were no tighter than a typical engine; 1/4 turn !  I am new to the little 5/8" Chevy plugs  - I am from MG and DeSoto and Ford so I was happy to use my 1990s Craftsman socket with new foam inside - neat o. I also scoped the bores and there is very little rust and no sign of carbon and the plugs actually look good; even though one is broken at the ceramic. MG was a lot worse so I'll take it. Honestly I am so happy to get on this and I appreciate the massive fenders that can hold tools and a 15" screen laptop and a lot of room.  I noticed the fan (and carb) are gone but that's okay. There is a "W" shaped crank shaft nut and I may a

Chevy soup

Because I want to monitor the progress I started live streaming here :  https://www.twitch.tv/vonkluver   Right now it's Chevy soup time on the Nevada head lamp bucket number 1  Had a rusty adjuster that I tried the beeswax and heat method in with success then brush up the contacts rig and fill

Stripping the Nevada sourced parts has begun. It's amazing the quality of the assembly and the familiarity of the design. My 61 MG has some of the same traits as the 41-46 Truck, making things almost second nature. My grandmas 50 DeSoto was truck like as well.  The head lamp assembly has already been a rust challenge - some of the mount studs snapped off despite heat and liquid wrench so I'll get spares sorted. They are like a carriage bolt pressed into the stamped steel, not even spot welded.  The turn signals came off no issue and now it's removing the glass and the trim before dealing with the desert and rust.  I will try electrolysis again with all the complex curves and pockets and books and crevices.  Funny the wire harness was in good shape and I bet this lamp will work (6 volts).  I suppose we will see how it all goes

Spares run June 30th to July 2 2023
