The Last Project: 1941 Chevrolet Pick Up

Hello reader.  

At the risk of sounding fatalistic,  I am calling this The Last Project. I am not getting younger nor am I getting wealthier.

We needed a pickup around here for small Home Depot runs and that sort of thing.  One option was a Harbor Freight trailer - but one of those nearly killed me (long story) and that would mean an assembly process and DMV nonsense. Plus it made in China and we are practicing a "China Last" policy around here. 

Also we are, by nature, recycle and reuse types and vintage vehicles are just that -  (ok I am cheap and will NOT drop $50k on a decent used pick up)  

Casual searches for 14 months yielded far away or a lot more cash than I wanted to commit on the front end.  

My Brother From Another, Jim would send things over occasionally and Mrs. and I would discuss and dismiss for one reason or another. Often it was great distance and virtual offerings. 

I gotta touch stuff before I buy it. Also BFAJ was taken on a cross country "ride" when he bought a pick up virtually that "had some rust but..."  that became quite an Odyssey.

Jim is more skilled than I, and more patient and he just completed a beauty Advanced Design  after several years. 

Don't get me wrong, I have fiddled with my 61 MG Midget for 30 some odd years but that was mostly due to those years being real - life - complex. 

Behold the 1941 Chevrolet that BFAJ sent over that was close by - 2 1/2 hours one way ain't bad in California - plus the mountains are pretty this time of year. 

So I went and looked and made a deal with a nice fella that has some acquaintances in common with myself.

That grill tho'

  Any fan of the Art Deco Era Chevrolet truck is a fan of the 'waterfall' grill.  As seen in previous posts the grill on this truck is pretty hammered and it has booger welds all across the bottom.  No reproductions seem to be out there and used off eBay and forums can be $600 and up. Resorted are $2,000 to $3,500 plus shipping. The restoration work done by a guy in Washington state commands this price, his work is beautiful and he's been doing that sort of things for 40 years.   Lucky we have the internet machines now and I spotted this set for sale a mere 9 hour drive away.  As luck would have it I have an auto racing brethren who graciously agreed to pop over and look at this for me since he lives near the posting.  A deal was struck after measurements were confirmed on the grill - the fenders are for a 1 1/2 Ton and too big for the 3/4t that we have - they will be sold. Walk up video

I am still trying to outwit Apple Live photos so there is no really good 'cover photo' but I figured out the YouTube process and posted the basic walk - up here.  For a 1941 the rust is very minor in the scary places although there will be a PB blaster can needed.  The torque tube and drive shaft and diff were removed along the way but the spares package has that.  There are three holes on the driver and passenger doors where a sign was likely mounted.  I did a little digging for the color and businesses of the area in the mid 1900's but have not located anything that fits quite yet.  Ideas welcome.

Spares run June 30th to July 2 2023

  Seemed like a good deal and a local who was a Russell from way back before me guy checked it out for me in person before I went. Seller was a gentleman as was his helper and the load was via fork lift !  Legit parts and a great drive in the hot southeast of California  Peaceful  U Haul open 5x7 towed like a dream  Del Taco stop at Baker  Palm Desert stop at mom in laws was toasty  Back home and cleaning the rust with the electrolysis process
